The ArtHotel is located in a small private park on Schmokenberg on Havelberg’s western slope, with its own boat jetty. “Art” comes from art and culture or a conscious way of life with a special style.

The numerous events, from exhibitions and music to comedy, are often sold out. So buy a ticket early — and how about a night before and/or after in one of the 34 rooms and suites?

Extras and special features are part of the ArtHotel. If you don’t like sharing a sauna, simply book a suite with a private sauna. Or would you prefer a heat cabin? That’s the suite next door.

Wheelchair? Dog? Intolerances? Surprises? Conferences? Weddings? Whatever you need or want, let the reception know.

The “Alte Kornspeicher” was lovingly renovated by a local Havelberg family. From a listed building beginning to decay, charming and spacious apartments were created.

You can check in and out independently. You’ll find a stock of drinks in the fridge and, if you get hungry, right on your doorstep is the restaurant ship “Hoffnung”.

Cooking for yourself? Gladly! Every apartment has a kitchenette and equipment. Free Wi-Fi, satellite TV and everything else you need is available at the Kornspeicher. The guest reviews speak for themselves, don’t they? Have a look on Booking.com:

Havel Suites in Havelberg on Havelstraße 44

Text and images: Havelsuites, Thomas Promny.

Havel Suites have been located since 2021 in the historic house with the mermaid on Havelstraße. Step by step we are renovating 9 apartments and turning them into beautiful, well-equipped holiday flats. It’s also very comfortable here in winter, with a sauna and heated outdoor pool.

The video shows the “Elbe” suite. For all suites there is also a pool, sauna, fitness and boat rental.

The Lahl family’s holiday apartment is just a two-minute walk from the cathedral. It’s also two minutes to the bakery, supermarket, hairdresser or massage. From here you don’t need a car in Havelberg. You can park it free of charge right at the door.

It’s a quiet ground-floor location. Up to four people can stay, but it’s really lovely for two.

Live in Havelberg like a local in a holiday apartment with parking and a shelter for bicycles. Supermarket, bakery and other shops are just a minute’s walk away. It’s a 10-minute walk to the old town island.

For two people the apartment is ideal for a longer stay, but if you come with your family, we’re happy to make up to 6 sleeping places.

Holiday apartment “Havel-Ausblick”

Havel View

The apartment offers around 60 square metres of spacious room for 2 people (bedroom, living room, dining area, bathroom with tub). It is centrally yet quietly located on the old town island with a view over the Roßmühlen footbridges to the Havel.

The rooms are in the attic and are therefore not barrier-free. Dogs are welcome. Please state breed and sex when enquiring/booking, as there is already a large but good-natured dog in the house.

Business travellers can use the conference room on the ground floor by the hour. Bicycles can be rented in the house and, if someone receives additional visitors, a sturdy camp bed or queen-size air mattress can be provided for one or two people.

Havelberg camping island

The Havelberg campsite is located on an island in the middle of the River Havel. Your way to the old town is via a pedestrian bridge. Your vehicle accesses the site via a single-lane bridge north of the marina.

With 80 tourist and 30 annual pitches on the island, it’s exactly the right size to remain friendly and down-to-earth while still meeting and connecting with others. You’ll find a 16A power connection at every pitch. At 100 m² they offer a good area. Some are specially reinforced for motorhomes. There are also comfort pitches with fresh water and wastewater.

Bottleneck: Horse Market

For 9 days in summer there is a state of exception in Havelberg: the Horse Market is in full swing and attracts — depending on the weather — 200,000 visitors! If you’re not coming just for the day, the question is: where to stay?

All of the beds listed above are usually fully booked weeks in advance. Therefore: it’s best to book a year ahead. Or if you’re reading this now and it’s already too late, have a look on Kleinanzeigen.de — some Havelberg locals occasionally offer private rooms or entire apartments.

City of Havelberg visitor’s tax (= overnight stay tax)

The visitor’s tax is a municipal tax on overnight stays within the city area and the districts of Toppel, Müggenbusch and Wöplitz. The person liable is the guest who stays overnight, regardless of whether in a hotel, a holiday apartment, a motorhome, a tent, a boat (!) or their own second home.

As the holder of a second home, you must “declare” the tax yourself annually. The annual flat rate is 42 euros. For commercial accommodation, the provider handles it. The visitor’s tax is added on top of the room bill.

The visitor’s tax only applies from the age of 16 and only in the period from 1 April to 31 October each year.

The visitor’s tax is 1 euro per person per night.

Exceptions: As we’re used to in Germany. Every tax law contains exceptions for groups who are not intended to be affected. These are:

  • Large families, insofar as they live in one household (only the first 4 family members are liable to pay)
  • People visiting Havelberg for a conference, seminar, training course, trade exhibition, fair, congress or similar
  • Civil servants on duty, business travellers
  • Participants in sporting competitions
  • Persons with a severe disability of 80% or more
  • Accompanying persons of severely disabled people who are named in the disability ID of the disabled person
  • Bedridden patients or other persons unable to use tourist facilities
  • Private visitors staying in private homes of locals (e.g. children living elsewhere or a date who stays overnight)

Problem: If your accommodation should not add the visitor’s tax to the bill, you must provide the accommodation with appropriate proof that one of the exceptions applies to you. (§ 5 para. 2 of the visitor’s tax statute).

The accommodation provider will want to document the exception appropriately, otherwise they face a fine of up to 10,000 euros. (§ 10 para. 2 of the visitor’s tax statute).

Whether accommodation providers have higher bureaucratic and financial costs than the city treasury takes in, we do not know. We are not financed from these levies. Addendum: In 2023, around 38,000 euros were paid into the city treasury. That is 0.27 % of all municipal inflows.

Fireworks as the highlight of the annual boat parade

City fireworks as the highlight of the annual boat parade (last weekend in August). The visitor’s tax was decided in 2017 with initial collection in 2018 to make facilities and events more attractive for tourism. (§ 1 para. 2 of the visitor’s tax statute).
